Edouard Pierson (Jeremy Irons), procedente de una familia belga dedicada al comercio de la lana, dejó Europa al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Desde entonces vive en Australia, donde lleva doce años a cargo de su propio negocio lanar y al cuidado de su hija Saturday, cuya existencia ignora su familia. Un buen día, su hermano Julien le pide que viaje a Verviers, su ciudad natal, para ayudarlos en la deteriorada empresa familiar. Allí conoce a Jeanne, una hermosa mujer casada, con la que inicia un romance. Saturday, por su parte, fomenta la relación con su abuela, descubriendo interesantes cosas acerca de su madre, a la que nunca conoció. Numerosos y oscuros secretos salen a la luz. Premio a la mejor fotografía en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Venecia.
